To hide grades in the Canvas grade book you must use the Grade Posting Policy.

How to hide grades if your assignment column is empty

  1. Go to your Canvas grade book.
  2. Click the 3 dot icon at the top of the assignment column (See, Fig. 1).Fig. 1, Grade Posting Policy

  4. Change the setting to Manual. The manual setting will hide the grades from the students until you Post Grades. The Automatic setting, which is the default, will show the grades to the students as soon as the assessment has been scored. Changing the setting to Manual will hide any grades that are entered into the column after the setting has been changed.
  5. Click Save.
  6. The grades will be hidden from the students until you choose to Post Grades.

How to hide grades if your assignment column already has grades

  1. Go to your Canvas grade book.
  2. Click the 3 dot icon at the top of the assignment column (See, Fig. 1).
  3. Click Hide Grades (See, Fig. 2). This will hide any current grades already in the column so that students can no longer see them.  However, it will not hide any future grades in the column.Fig. 2, Hide Grades
  4. Follow the steps 1-5 above to change the Grade Posting Policy to Manual.  This will hide future grades from the students until you choose to Post Grades.

Note: You may also set the default posting policy in your course to Manual. To do so, click the Gear icon at the top right of your grade book and then click the Grade Posting Policy tab.  Change the option to Manual and then click Update.
